Breast Cancer in LaFayette
Health care professionals of today are challenged with the responsibility to improve populations' health. This entails more than just treating hospitalized patients; it also means driving healthy behaviors. Thus, clinical prevention and population health skills are integral portions of the nursing profession. The nursing school at Auburn University integrates these concepts into the nursing curriculum through the three-semester-long community assessment project. To complete this project, my team members and I visited Lafayette, Alabama to assess the community for teaching opportunities. We focused on breast cancer among African American women. After our community assessment, we taught prevention techniques, such as breast self-examination and the importance of yearly screening. This project taught me the importance and function of community nursing.
