The United States is more ethnically and racially diverse than ever. Therefore, the ability to understand and communicate with people of various backgrounds is essential to providing effective patient care. It is critical for nurses to learn patients' expectations, verify generalizations and provide culturally sensitive health care interventions. Nurses must bridge the gap across cultural differences. Fortunately, in this day and age, we can use technology to answer our questions before engaging with a patient. This is an area in which I excel. I understand diversity and the need for culture awareness well because I myself am from another country and culture. My experiences with Auburn University's nursing program have strengthened my understanding of cultures with which I was otherwise unfamiliar, and taught me communication tactics for respectfully seeking answers.
