Evidence-based practice (EBP) is the accepted method for using critically appraised and scientifically proven evidence for making the best decisions and delivering quality health care. Over the past decade, nursing practice and medicine have greatly advanced thanks to EBP. In the fall of 2017, my peers and I conducted research on childhood obesity. Using EBP, we sough to answer the question, “For school-aged children, can the inclusion of more fruits and vegetables in everyday meals decrease childhood obesity?” Throughout the process, I learned how to locate reputable sources and compile evidence. According to our research, two childhood obesity interventions produced the best health outcomes. Both took a holistic approach--not only did they increase fruit and vegetable consumption, but they also worked to increase moderate daily exercise and to maintain a healthy body mass index. This experience taught me how to determine the relevance and strength of bodies of research. As a future
nurse, I will incorporate this lesson into my everyday practice by using EBP methods to appraise treatment methods before recommending them to patients.
